This blog post will focus on two of Africa’s most important staple crops: cassava and potato. While both are root crops, they have different needs, and a successful dry season harvest requires specific techniques for each.
Cassava Farming: Thriving in the Drought
Cassava is known for its remarkable drought tolerance. However, to get a good yield, you can’t just plant and hope for the best. A young cassava plant needs about 3-4 months of consistent rain to establish a strong root system and build up its starch content. Planting just before the dry season can be risky, so if you are a rain-fed farmer, it’s best to plan your planting to align with the start of the rainy season.
If you have access to irrigation, here are some key tips for dry season cassava farming. First, choose the right variety. Not all cassava varieties are created equal. Some are bred specifically for their ability to withstand drought. Look for varieties with a “stay-green” trait, which means they retain their leaves and continue to grow even during the dry season. Dixon (TMS-980581), UMUCASS 43 (IITA TMS I011206), and NR 03/0155 are known for their drought tolerance and high yield potential in Nigeria.
Next, select and prepare your cuttings. Use healthy, disease-free stem cuttings from mature plants. Cuttings should be at least 20-25 cm long and have several nodes. Use a clean, sharp knife to make precise cuts to prevent pathogen transmission.
Prioritize soil health and water conservation. Deep ploughing and ridging can improve soil structure, increase aeration, and make it easier for roots to develop. Mulching is a crucial dry season technique. Applying a thick layer of mulch (like dry grass, leaves, or crop residue) around your cassava plants will help to reduce water evaporation from the soil, suppress weed growth, and maintain a cooler, more consistent soil temperature. Intercropping, planting cassava with legumes like cowpea or groundnut, can help fix nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility and providing a cover crop that acts as a living mulch.
While cassava can survive a dry spell, consistent moisture is vital for optimal tuber development and yield. If you have an ample water source, consider using strategic irrigation, such as drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to the root zone, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
Finally, manage pests and diseases. Young plants are more susceptible to pests during a drought. Regularly monitor your farm and be proactive in managing pests and diseases. Using disease-resistant varieties is your first and best line of defense.
Potato Farming: A Calculated Dry Season Gamble
Potatoes are more water-intensive than cassava, but with careful planning, they can be a great option for the dry season, especially if you have a reliable water source. Potatoes have a shorter growth cycle (60-120 days), which makes them a viable choice for late-season planting.
Here’s how to ensure a successful potato harvest. Choose fast-maturing varieties. Since the dry season is short, you need to select potato varieties that mature quickly. Look for varieties with a 60-90 day maturity period. While specific local varieties may vary, fast-maturing options are key.
Soil is everything for potatoes. They thrive in loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Before planting, incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and its ability to hold moisture. Potatoes prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.8 and 6.5.
Consistent watering is non-negotiable. Consistent moisture is crucial for potatoes, especially during tuber formation, which typically happens 6-8 weeks after planting. Insufficient water during this period can lead to misshapen or hollow potatoes and a poor yield. If you’re farming in the dry season, irrigation is a must. Drip or furrow irrigation systems are highly effective. Aim for about one inch of water per week, and check the soil’s moisture level to ensure water is reaching the roots.
As your potato plants grow, mound soil up around the stems to form a ridge. This practice, known as “earthing up“ or “hilling,” serves several purposes. It protects developing tubers from sunlight, which can turn them green and inedible. It provides a larger area for the new potatoes to grow and helps with weed control.
Be proactive with pest and disease control. Potatoes are susceptible to pests and diseases like late blight, especially in humid conditions. Regularly scout your farm and be prepared to take action.
