Bridging the Nutrition Gap: How Ayosifam’s Successful Introduction of Vitamin A Potatoes is Transforming Kwara’s Smallholders

For weeks, our search across Kwara State for Vitamin A-biofortified potato vines came up empty. Despite our commitment to climate-smart agriculture and expanding nutritious food options, finding reliable planting stock locally felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Undeterred, our team extended our search outward, finally discovering a trusted source in Ibadan around June 2026. We secured the vines and distributed small bundles to young, dedicated smallholder farmers within our network to plant and monitor.

Recent farm visits to inspect these trials have yielded inspiring results—proving definitively that Vitamin A-biofortified potatoes can thrive in Kwara State just as well as conventional varieties.

Mr. Mohammed’s Testimony: A Vision for Nutrition and Livelihoods

Among our participating farmers is Mr. Mohammed, who proudly walked us through his farm to showcase how vigorously the Vitamin A potato plants are growing.

When he first received the vines, Mr. Mohammed admitted he had doubts about whether the biofortified variety would adapt well to local soil and weather conditions. Today, his perspective has completely shifted. Beaming with pride, he shared how impressed he is with the crop’s robust health and rapid development.

Beyond the agricultural success, Mr. Mohammed is most excited about the direct impact on his household. He noted with enthusiasm that the harvest will significantly improve his family’s daily nutrition, providing a vital source of beta-carotene and essential vitamins right from his own land.

A Sustainable Cycle: From Kitchen Table to Commercial Scale

Mr. Mohammed’s vision doesn’t stop at his family’s plate. Recognizing the high demand and superior nutritional value of biofortified crops, he has made a firm commitment:

  • Preserving the Vines: He will carefully preserve and multiply the vines after harvest.

  • Expanding Production: He plans to dramatically scale up his own planting area next season.

  • Empowering Fellow Farmers: He intends to supply surplus planting vines to other local potato farmers next year, creating a localized seed-dissemination network right within the community.

Milestones in Agricultural Innovation and Poverty Reduction

For Ayosifam Integrated Service Ltd, this milestone marks a major victory. We have officially and successfully introduced Vitamin A potatoes to Kwara State, bridging a crucial gap in our regional value chain.

This success goes beyond crop diversification—it strikes at the heart of rural economic development:

  1. Nutritional Security: Introducing beta-carotene-rich foods directly tackles micronutrient deficiencies in rural farming households.

  2. Income Diversification: By empowering farmers like Mr. Mohammed to become commercial producers and vine suppliers, we create new revenue streams.

  3. Poverty Reduction: Equipping smallholders with resilient, high-value biofortified crops enhances their market competitiveness, reduces post-harvest vulnerability, and builds lasting generational wealth in rural communities.

As we continue to champion climate-smart agriculture, zero-waste processing, and community-led innovation, milestones like this remind us why we do what we do. Together with our farmers, Ayosifam is planting the seeds of a healthier, more prosperous future for Kwara State.
