Exploited Roots

The Unfair Reality for Rural Cassava Farmers. I witnessed firsthand the stark imbalance at the cassava market. Farmers, who endure months of labor and investment, are stripped of their rightful earnings. Middlemen, who contribute nothing to cultivation, pocket substantial profits – ₦10,000 per pickup load, or ₦5,000 for smaller vehicles. After transportation costs and the middleman’s cut, farmers receive a fraction of the value they created. This system perpetuates poverty, denying those who feed us a fair return. To break this cycle, we need: direct market access for farmers, local processing to add value, and policy changes to ensure equitable distribution of profits. Is this just the cassava story, or does it reflect a wider problem?
